2012 Cross Country Patroon Conference Preview |
Patroon Conference Boys
Maple Hill is the defending champion and with six out of their top seven returning, led by Jordan Healy, they should be big favorites to repeat. Chatham also returns six out of seven, plus, they've also added some runners from their sectional championship outdoor track team. They look to be the only team that can give Maple Hill at shot. Greenville brings back a good portion of their team but is up at third based on their potential from their younger runners. Hawthorne Valley and Catskill should be next but have a lot of holes to fill. The rest of the schools are looking to fill up their teams.
Individually, look for a heads up battle between Maple Hill's Jordan Healy and Chatham's Ross Wightman. Healy has the best returning time but Wightman really stepped it up during the Spring.
Maple Hill is the defending champion and return six out of their top seven from last year. The team is led by Junior Jordan Healy who was in the mid 16's last year and has the top returning time in the league. Seniors Jake Davis, Leland Axtmann were both in the mid 18's last year and are their second and third runners. Juniors Adrian Barber and Norm Bullinger are their fourth and fifth runners. Maple Hill has by far the best depth in the league as no other school in the league has more than two runners under 19 minutes. That should be more than enough to give them a repeat title. Still, they will want to close that gap between Healy and the rest of the team so they can be more competitive at sectionals.
Chatham returns their top six out of their first seven. Senior Ross Wightman, their top runner, is one of the favorites for the league title and was in the high 16's last year. After an excellent spring season I expect him to be even better. Their second runner, Sophomore Ian Allen, was in the mid 18's and almost two minutes behind Wightman. Senior Joe Stetz should come in as their third runner and was in the low 19's last year. Senior Gabriel Franck should be their fourth and was in the mid 20 minute range last year. At first I thought their depth would end there but they picked up quite a few runners to help. Not sure what they are capable of but if a oucple of them could work into their top five then they will be much tougher.
Greenville returns four out of seven from last year. Including losing their top runner from last year. Sophomore Luke Mistler takes over as their number one runner and was in the mid 18's last year. Junior Bayley Kuykendall should be their second runner and was only a few seconds behind Mistler. Then there's a big gap as their third and fourth runners, Junior Cort Tisch and Sophomore Jaymey Kukendall we both in the mid 20 minute range last year. So why do I have Greenville in at 3rd? Because of the two 8th graders that should be coming up this year. They went 1-2 in the league championships with a Greenville 7th grader in third. In a league that doesn't have much depth, these two have the ability to jump right into Greenville's top five and make a big impact.
Hawthorne Valley returns six of their top seven from last year, I think. I'm missing a couple of grades from their runners and they could be gone but I'm basing their team with them in there. Junior Carlos Strauss takes over as their number one runner and was just under 18 minutes last year. Sophomore Alex Easton and DeGerman DeCarlos should be their second and third runners but are almost two minutes behind Strauss in the high 19's. Sophomore Kasimar Winter-Suter should be their fourth runner and was in the 21 minute range last year with their fifth runner over 26 minutes last year. They really need some more bodies on their team as there is no depth at all but unfortunately they didn't have any runners on modified at their league championships. Right now I have Hawthorne Valley fourth based on their top three but they are going to need a lot of help in their back end.
Catskill was one of the hardest hit schools in the section by losing six out of their top seven from last year including state qualifier Seth Bulich. Sophomore Caleb Davies takes over the number one spot and was just under 19 minutes last year. Senior Patrick Fenaughty should be their second runner and was in the mid 19's last year. Sophomore Matt Davis is the last of their remaining runners from last year and was just over 20 minutes later year. They didn't have any modified runners last year but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt that they'll have a complete team. If they can get another couple of runners then they could move up a couple of places in the league.
Taconic Hills returns four of the six runners they had last year. Senior Justin Miller is the top returning runner and was in the mid 19's last year. Senior Brandon Rice should be their second runners and was in the low 20's last year. After that, the other two remaining runners were both over 22 minutes and will need to improve. Not sure if they'll be complete this year as they only return four runners and didn't have any modified runners last year. Hopefully they'll have enough bodies this year.
Hudson only returns two from the six runners they had last year. Junior Jordan Corrigan joins the team and is their number one runner. Sophomore John Bath is their number two runners and was in the high 20's last year. Senior Adam Dusenbery is their third runner and was in the low 21 minute range last year. The team will be filled out by newcomers, Freshman James Chaplin, 8th grader Gavin Colwell, and Junior Alan Graziano. Hudson will need some big help from their new runners to move up in the league.
Cairo-Durham doesn't return any runners form last year but add four runners. Seniors Tom Geno and Dominck Maynard, coupled with Juniors Sean Feeney and Brandon LaFever make up their team. All four are projected to be over 22 minutes. Hopefully they can add a fifth runner and drop their times a little.
Coxsackie-Athens returns five out of seven from last year. Senior Jonathan Pacuk is their top returning runner and was just over 21 minutes last year. Everyone else on the team was over 22 minutes. For a young team they have great numbers but they need to get their times down to start moving up in the league.
Windham-Ashland-Jewett return five out of six. Top runners are Sophomores Tristen Jaeger and Chris Weiman. It's tough to gage what they're capable of since they're not a Section 2 school and I don't have times from Saratoga. What they do have is a young team so they have a lot of room for improvement and they have brought on many new runners this year. They can do much better then where I have them.
Hunter-Tannersville returns two from the four runners they had last year but bring in enough runners to have a full team this year. Sophomores Zach Hommel and Conor Graham are the two runners returning. They had a couple of modified runners but may have a tough time running complete this year.

Last Year's Team Champion: Maple Hill
Like their boys team, Maple Hill is the defending league champion and return six out of their top seven and should be a big favorite to repeat as champion. After Maple Hill there looks to be a logjam for second place. Coxsacie-Athens, Catskill, and Chatham all have a shot at second. not sure if any of them can challenge Chatham though. Windham-Ashland-Jewett looks to be the only team with a complete team but I don't see them moving up. The rest of the schools are looking for a complete team.
Individually, Maple Hill's Hannah Riordan is the defending league champion but Chatham's Erin Clark is coming up from modified and will be a real challenge for Riordan.
Maple Hill, the three time defending champion, returns six out of their top seven and are a big favorite to repeat. Senior Hannah Riordan is the defending league champion and was in the high 19's last year. She returns as their number one runner. Senior Kelly Pasko is their second runner and was about 30 seconds behind Riordan in the mid 20's. Newcomer Anna Curtin is a Senior and is their third runner. 8th grader Monica Strain moves up from modified and is their fourth runner. Juniors Melanie Hicks and Sarah Plitnick will take over the fifth and sixth spots. The addition of Curtin and Strain really helps their depth out which is bad news for the rest of the league. They'll still want to see the gap between their top two and the rest of their team close.
Coxsackie-Athens return five out of their top seven but do lose their top runner, Kristen Schmidt, to graduation. Sophomore Katrina Josberger should come in as their top runner and was just under 21 minutes last year. Katrina's sister, 8th grader Tara, is just behind her in the second slot and was just over 21 minutes last year. Senior Christina Hammerer should be their third runner and was in the mid 22 minute range last year. Sophomores Grace and Ali Stanton should be in the fourth and fifth positions for the team. They have a solid top two with the Josbergers but the rest of the team is at least a minute and a half behind them and need to close the gap. Maple Hill will be tough to catch but they'll need that spread to close to hang on to second.
Catskill returns their entire team from last year. Freshman Anna Davies returns as their number one runner and was in the low 20's last year. Juniors Maddie Mercado and Katia Davies should be their second and third runners and both were in the mid 21 minute range last year. Freshman Autumn Doney should be their fourth runner but was almost two minutes behind in the mid low 23's last year. After that, the rest of the team are all over 26 minutes. They really need someone to step up and take that fifth spot. Also, they have two large gaps, between their first runner and their second and third runners, and the gap between the fourth and fifth runners. They really need to shut these spreads down if they want to challenge for second place in the league.
Chatham returns five of their top seven from last year but they are the only five that they are returning. Freshman Erin Clark comes up from their modified and should be their number one runner this year and possibly the top runner in the league. I'm basing this on her 10:56 in the 3000 meters last Spring. Juniors Katelyn Hunter and Faith Avens should be their second and third runners as they were in the mid to high 20 minute range last year. After their top three there is a huge gap as their fourth and fifth runners, Juniors Chloe Powers and Katura DeLisca, were both around 27 minutes last year. Chatham has arguably the best top three in the league but they'll need some help in their back end. They may get some help from their modified team since there were a couple of other 8th graders with Clark last year and they could step up and take those positions.
Windham-Ashland-Jewett only return three out of the five runners they had last year, but bring in a bunch of new young runners. Seniors Nicole Malen and Kelly Linger with Junior Zahia Ismail are their retuning runners but Senior Cayley Woodbeck and Junior Oksana Korostil will fill up their lineup. Though they didn't run at Saratoga because they're not a Section 2 school, it's projected that they would've been in the 26 to 27 minute range last year. Hopefully they'll have enough runners for a full team this year but they'll struggle to move up in the league.
Cairo-Durham returns the only runner they had last year and bring in one more. Senior Brianne McManus returns and was in the high 25's last year. Freshman Sabrina Maynard comes up from modified and is their only other varsity runner right now. Hopefully they can get a few more bodies to fill the team.
Greenville only has four runners this year but are hopeful they can pick up at least one more. Senior Marjoree Perezella comes in as their number one runner. She is closely followed by Sophomores Caroline Bobrick, Taylor Olmstead, and Rachel Coe-Scharff. Even if they do get a complete team, they'll have a tough time moving up in the league, but taking it one step at a time is the approach they should take.
Hawthorne Valley only had two runners last year but should return both of them this year. Melissa Frishkopf should be their number one and was just over 24 minutes last year. Emily Gitt-Henderson is their second runner and was in the high 25 minute range last year.
Hudson returns two out of their three runners from last year. Freshman Alexandra Bartolotta joins the team this year and is their number one runner based on an excellent track season. She has the ability of being one of the top runners in the league. Senior McKenzie Colwell is a solid number two as she was in the mid 20's last year. Junior Shannon LaChance is their sthird runner and was in the low 22 minute range last year. Right now they only have four runners on their team. Hopefully can add a few runners to fill the team this year.
Hunter-Tannersville only had one runner last year, Junior Emma Wilson. She's probably would've been in the 26 minute range last year.
