2015 Cross Country
Girls Sectional Preview |
Note: As I say every year, this is just a projection. It's pretty much everyone's best Saratoga State Park times and some adjustments where I felt it was needed. I have no knowledge of runners that are out injured so I included just about everyone that has run but I have left out some runners that have been out for multiple weeks.
Girls: Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D
Girls Class A - 1:00pm
What to looks for: Last year it took a 6th man tiebreaker for Saratoga to claim its 15th consecutive sectional title. This year they look to have a little more space between themselves and Shenendehowa as Saratoga claims seven of the top eleven times in Class A. Shenendehowa usually comes on strong at Sectionals and was missing at least one runner last week at Suburbans (who I probably left out) but they will have a tough time this year breaking through Saratoga's depth. Colonie and Guilderland are also very strong and will challenge Shenendehowa for the runner-up spot. Individually Saratoga's Kelsey Chmiel showed last weekend that she is the runner to beat based on her impressive win at Suburbans and is the favorite this week too. Shenendehowa's Danielle Jordan, Colonie's Kathryn Tenney and Guilderland Emily Bini are the ones that will Challenge her.

Girls Class B - 1:30pm
What to looks for: Looks to be another fight between Burnt Hills and Queensbury. Two years ago Queensbury surprised Burnt Hills with the win then went on to the state titles, last year Burnt Hills won big and went on to the state title. This year looks to be closer with the winner begin the favorites to win another state titles for Section 2. Burnt Hills is the early favorite based on their depth. It's a one point race through three runners but then Burnt Hills puts the fourth and fifth into the top ten. Queensbury has been doing what they usually do, start off the season slow and move closer little by little during the year. Do they have enough in their fourth and fifth runner to do it again? It's possible, but tough. Eva Scott of Burnt Hills is the only runner in the field to go sub 18 on the Saratoga State Park course and is a big favorite to win. Amsterdam's Olivia Lazarou and Queensbury's Sherri Metcalfe and Emily Atamanchuk look to challenge Scott.

Girls Class C - 2:00pm
What to looks for: Like the boys, so many teams, so many runners. The team race though, looks a little clearer. Chatham has a great combination of up front running and much greater depth which makes them the favorite to win their first sectionals title since 2003. Schuylerville and Broadalbin-Perth both push Chatham through three runners but then Chatham puts their fourth and fifth runners in the top 25. Schuylerville needs much more from their fifth runner plus one of their top runners, Ashley Watson has not run in the last couple of weeks and is a question mark for sectionals. Broadalbin-Perth, Fonda-Fultonville, and even Schalmont, if they get bigger races from their fourth and fifth runners, should battle for the second spot. Individually, after winning in 2013, Schalmont's Julia Flower had to sit out last year. Now she's back and looks strong which makes her the favorite for he second sectional title. It won't be easy as Greenville's Olivia Baumann has the second best time at Saratoga but Chatham's Hallie Allen and Hudson's Alexandra Bartolotti have been very strong at the end of the year.

Girls Class D - 2:30pm
What to looks for: Running in Class C or Class D, Greenwich has been on top and usually by a big margin. This year is no different as they have the top four runners and are once again big favorites to win and have a good shot at a State Championship next week. Last year's Class D champ,Duanesburg, and Maple Hill will fight it out for second with Duanesburg as the favorite based on their better depth. Individually, Greenwich's Emma Cronin has the top Saratoga time coming in but Greenwich's top four have been pretty much interchangeable this year as Tori Spiezio came back to win the Wasaren championship last week. Maple Hill's Monica Strain and Duanesburg's Elaine Atanasova could challenge with big races.
